May 15: Black Excellence Day
Nova Scotiaās public schools willĀ celebrateĀ Black Excellence Day on Monday, May 15Ā Everyone is invited to wear black t-shirts/clothing toĀ stand in unity and support of the success of Black students.
Black Excellence Day celebrates the achievements, stories, art, and innovations of Black people and their communities. It isĀ also a day to commemorate the ongoing struggle by Black Canadians for civil and human rights and to remember that small actions can make BIG differences.
Creating learning environments where students see their language, home culture, and lives is one way we support student success and empowerment. Black Excellence Day is an opportunity for students to see themselves represented, acknowledged, and celebrated, and for allies to better understandĀ and recognize the lived experiences and perspectives of Black students.
On Black Excellence Day and throughout the year, we are proud to recognize the 400-year legacy of people of African descent in Nova Scotia, as well as the many diverse cultures, ethnicities, faiths, and experiences of people of African descent throughout the world.
Everyone is welcome to support Black Excellence DayĀ by wearing black clothing or celebrating in a way that is meaningful to you.
In AVRCE, Black Excellence is something we strive to support and highlight for students throughout the year. See some examples at https://www.avrce.ca/black-excellence-day
