Horton High School – Calendar Update March 2026
Horton office hours
The Horton office is only staffed to answer phones between 8:15 AM and 4:00 PM. We do not have an answering service available. To contact the office outside of these operating hours, please email jodye.routledge@avrce.ca or send a text message to 902-670-8879.
School Attendance:
Consistent and positive student attendance is crucial to student success.Ā As in previous years, we will continue to do our very best to make all learning meaningful.Ā Teachers and/or administration will notify you when we see a concern but never hesitate to reach out to the school to check in on your student(s).Ā Ā
Please help Horton promote positive school attendance. Nova Scotia Attendance and Engagement policy
A friendly reminder to please inform us of all absences so they can be recorded as AWN (Absent with Notification) or MR (Medical Reason). If your child misses an assessment and their absence is not recorded as one of these codes in PowerSchool, their teacher will contact you to notify you of the missed assessment.Ā Once marked AWN or MR, the assessment should be written in a timely manner.Ā Ā
School Lateness:
It is time to change the culture regarding arriving late to school.Ā Please be sure that your child is arriving on time and attending school.Ā In previous years, students who drove to school were not giving themselves enough time to get to school and to class on time, causing continued disruption to the office and classroom staff. Coming late means missing out on learning and disrupting the learning of other students.Ā
Chronic lateness is a concern addressed by the attendance policy.Ā Our first bell rings at 8:55.Ā This means that students should be arriving at the school doors no later than 8:50 to make their way to their first class. Punctuality is one item addressed by this attendance policy.
Horton is now sending alert messages for student lateness in addition to the usual practice of informing homes when a student is absent for class.Ā Please reach out to grade level administration if you have any questions or concerns.Ā This system has one flaw when alerting lateness.Ā There is no code for excused lates, meaning anyone that has a L in the system will be notified at 3:00 PM.Ā Ā Ā
