Horton’s Cultural Space: A Foundation of Respect and Learning
We’re thrilled to share an exciting development at Horton High School ā the initial stages of our Cultural Space are officially taking shape! This spring, we saw the foundational elements of this important new addition come to life, marking a significant step in our commitment to honoring the Mi’kmaq people and their unceded ancestral lands, Mi’kma’ki.
The assembly of the foundation was a collaborative effort, guided by Alex Cole of Little Foot Yurts. Alex worked alongside a dedicated team including Jodye Routledge, Adam Branchaud (our Mi’kmaw/Indigenous Cultural Coach), Keegan Holley (Horton’s Mi’kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Worker), and student Jonathen. Their hard work laid the groundwork for what will be a truly special place within our school.
This Cultural Space, skillfully built by Alex and Selena Cole of Little Foot Yurts, will be fully assembled in the late summer or early fall. Once complete, it will serve as a versatile area for our school community. We envision it being utilized as a vibrant classroom space, a welcoming meeting place, and for any other appropriate uses that foster learning, understanding, and connection.
This initiative deeply reflects Horton’s unwavering dedication to recognizing and respecting that we are living, working, and playing on Mi’kma’ki, the unceded traditional territory of the Mi’kmaq People. We acknowledge the enduring presence, resilience, and contributions of the Mi’kmaq Nation. This Cultural Space is a tangible representation of our commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures and histories, and to building meaningful relationships based on mutual respect and reciprocity.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Mi’kmaq people for their stewardship of this land since time immemorial. We are committed to ongoing learning and reconciliation, and this Cultural Space is one way we strive to honor that commitment.
Stay tuned for more updates as our Cultural Space continues to develop! We look forward to the many ways it will enrich our school community.
